Healthy Scalp, Healthy Hair

You don’t need to have a team of celebrity stylists to have a glossy mane of hair like Jennifer Aniston. We’ll get to the root causes of all your hair concerns and believe it or not, it’s about more than just the hair apparent.

statemaneWe often talk about needing to touch up our roots, but in reality, the root or bulb of the hair lies deep under the skin. The hair we see sprouting from our scalp is actually called the hair shaft and it is not the living part of your hair. The hair shaft travels deep into the skin through a tunnel called the hair follicle, at the base of which is the real root of your hair. This is the exciting place where all the action really happens. Cells are dividing like crazy. In fact, these cells work harder and faster than any other cells in your body to build the keratin protein that largely comprises the hair shaft.

hairnecessitiesHealthy hair begins deep under your scalp with this keratin-building process which gives your hair structure and strength. Stress can have a major impact on your hair health, disrupting the flow of vital nutrients to the bulb. Just like you fuel your body for clearer, more youthful looking skin, so should you nourish your mind and body for better hair health. A healthy diet rich in Omega-3s, Protein, Zinc, Iron, Vitamin C and Vitamin A (but not too much A) helps support lush, healthy locks.

dryitchyscalpOverstyling and overprocessing can damage your hair and lead to an itchy, dry scalp. You moisturize your skin when it is dry, but have you ever considered moisturizing your scalp? Women are often afraid to condition their scalps for fear it will lead to greasy hair. Actually, a dry, itchy scalp is craving hydration. A little bit of Jojoba Oil massaged into the scalp can restore the moisture levels, eliminating those pesky dandruff flakes.

greasyhairA flaky scalp doesn’t always mean dandruff. Sometimes those flakes are a result of too much sebum or oil combining with bacteria to form the thick flakes of seborrheic dermatitis. To banish these flakes, you need to balance your scalp’s pH levels with a salicylic shampoo. Or try this home remedy… Mix a teaspoon of baking soda with clear shampoo. Lather & rinse. Then use a half and half mixture of water and apple cider vinegar. Warm the concoction in the microwave for a spa-like effect. Add a drop of Lavender Oil for a calming, sweet scent. Massage it into your scalp, then rinse.

dulldryhairThe cuticle, the outermost layer of the hair shaft, envelops the hair in a thin covering of clear “scales”. Smoothing these “scales” with a deep condition, keratin treatment or even a cool rinse gives our tresses a shiny, youthful appearance when coupled with a good dose of moisture for the scalp. A deeply moisturizing hair mask provides the perfect, soothing hydration.

tinywhitebumpsLittle bumps on your scalp are often the result of a blocked follicle, which over time, can lead to hair loss if not treated. To clear away the blockage, try the antibacterial effects of Tea Tree Oil. You can try a specially formulated shampoo or whip up your own. Simply add a few drops to your favorite dollop of shampoo. Not only will you get the tingles, but the smell is invigorating.

Soft Surroundings has some adorable clothes; however, the shipping is ridiculous. I have probably just ordered my last time. My last order had 2 items, neither of which worked for me. Upon returning those items, shipping costs me almost $30. That’s absurd!!! Most high end websites have free shipping over a certain amount and then normal postage to return. Why would it cost almost $20 to ship and only $6.95 to return. Rip Off. Thanks but no thanks!!

I ordered the most wonderful shampoo from your catalog, and need to order again, but am having trouble finding a catalog with this wonderful shampoo featured. Its Propoline and I just LOVE it!!
Please tell me I can still order from your catalog! Its the most wonderful shampoo I”ve ever used for my hair, which was getting a little thinner, and after several shampoos, my hair was thicker, and my hair was almost like natural curl it held the shampoo and set so well.
I would appreciate you writing me and giving me the address so I can order Propoline soon! Thanks very much, B J Lewis 803-425-95l6
