Nine Ways to Treat & Prevent Lip Lines

By on October 22, 2018, in Beauty Knowledge Center

Over ten years ago, my husband and I started Dermelect with one mission in mind: to empower women with solutions to their biggest concerns. Amos has roots in the beauty industry for over 30 years and I am a self-professed beauty junkie who has personally experienced every beauty issue at one time or another. Together we’re determined to provide luxurious treatments that set realistic expectations yet provide real results.

One of the areas that Dermelect has identified as being a real concern to the ever-changing woman is the lips, specifically lip wrinkling. Lip lines (also known as smoker’s lines, lipstick lines, or perioral lines) are one of the first signs of aging for many women. And unfortunately for us, they’re notoriously difficult to conceal! As lips lose natural volume with age, they tend to develop vertical lines that can extend all the way up to the nose. Lipstick can feather into these lines, making them even more noticeable and many times embarrassing. Many women fail to treat their lips as part of their anti-aging skincare routine, even though the lips are actually one of the most delicate parts of the face.

We know there is nothing funny about laugh lines, feathering lip lines, and thin lips, which often give the appearance that we are much older than we really are. That’s why we developed the Dermelect Ultimate Smooth Lip Kit. We sourced the best ingredients, hyaluronic plumping spheres, muti-peptides, key conditioning and hydrating actives in an amazing set that millions of women worldwide have made into a must-have part of their daily regimen.

If you want to learn how to prevent and treat lip lines, keep reading! We’ll explain what habits you should adapt – and which you should drop – for a smoother, more youthful-looking mouth.

Why Do Lip Lines Form?
Lip lines form as a natural part of the aging process, which in itself has several different causes:

First, starting in your 20’s, your skin begins producing 1% less collagen each year. Collagen is a structural protein that gives skin its soft, youthful appearance. Without collagen, skin begins to sag and wrinkle. Second, as we age, our skin produces less natural oils. These oils are meant to keep skin moisturized, and without them, fine lines are more obvious. The lips are especially prone to dryness, because they don’t have an epidermal layer (where oil is produced).

Additionally, some lifestyle factors can further exacerbate the problem. If you were a sun worshipper in your youth, you’re more likely to struggle with lip lines since UV rays accelerate the aging process. Smoking, drinking too much alcohol, and eating a poor diet can also make lip lines worse.

Lip lines are considered “dynamic wrinkles” meaning they are caused by the movement of facial muscles. For this reason, people who have more naturally expressive faces tend to get more wrinkles. Sure, you could swear of speaking in order to preserve your pout, but that’s not necessary. Keep reading for our actionable tips on reducing and preventing lip lines – without needles!

How to Treat & Prevent Lip Lines

1. Use a Lip Balm with SPF
UV rays deteriorate the structural integrity of the skin, accelerating the aging process in a process called photoaging. That’s why all skincare experts harp on wearing sunscreen every day! Even if you’ve never worn sunscreen before, it’s never too late to start and help prevent the worsening of lip lines in the future. Look for a lip balm with SPF and reapply often to make sure your lips stay protected.

2. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!
As we mentioned the lips are particularly prone to dryness. Not only do they produce less oil than the rest of your face, but they are also constantly exposed to the elements. Use a lip treatment that contains hydrating ingredients like shea butter and hyaluronic acid to give lips a boost of moisture, temporarily smoothing fine lines.

3. Don’t Use Straws
Lip lines are considered dynamic wrinkles, meaning that they’re caused by repeated movements. Like smoking cigarettes, puckering your lips to drink out of a straw can increase lip lines. Skip using the straws to protect your lips! Plus, you’ll be doing the environment a favor!

4. Quit Smoking
Lip lines are made worse by smoking, which is why they have the nickname “Smoker’s’ Lines”. Cigarette smoke contains many toxic chemicals include Nicotine which may cause staining to the upper lip. It can damage cellular DNA and speed up signs of aging, not to mention, the repeated movement of puckering the lips to smoke can lead to more dynamic wrinkling. Just another reason to quit smoking!

5. Neutralize Free Radicals
Every day, our skin absorbs unhealthy free radicals from the environment. These free radicals wreak havoc on the skin and accelerate the aging process. To counteract these effects, incorporate more antioxidants into your life. Antioxidants like those found in superfoods like berries, dark chocolate, or green tea work to neutralize these free radicals and protect your lips from aging

Eat more antioxidant-rich foods, or look for lip treatments that contain antioxidants. Dermelect’s on-the-lip treatment, Smooth Lip Volumizer contains vitamin C and vitamin E, both of which are natural antioxidants that protect and rejuvenate lips.

6. Be Gentle with Your Lips
Roughly tugging at lips with a dull lipliner pencil or pulling on your lips can accelerate the breakdown of collagen and elastin. Translation? Lip lines are going to show up earlier. Use a light hand when applying lip products.

7. Supplement with Collagen
Lip lines and lip thinning are caused by loss of collagen, so it makes sense that incorporating more collagen into your routine can help smooth lip lines.
Make a batch of bone broth at home, or mix collagen peptide powder into your coffee for a boost of the skin-firming protein.

Or, you can apply topically with a collagen-infused lip treatment like Dermelect Smooth Upper Lip & Perioral Anti-Aging Treatment. Using twice daily helps to reinvigorate the skin with collagen protein to smooth out lip lines.

8. Exfoliate Your Lips
You exfoliate your face, but do you exfoliate your lips? Clearing away the old, dead skin cells with reveal fresher, more-youthful looking lips underneath. Plus, exfoliating your lips will make your treatments more effective. Use a lip scrub to exfoliate the lips once or twice per week. Alternatively, you can use an old toothbrush and water to gently buff away dead skin on your lips.

9. Smooth Lip Lines with Retinol
Retinol is still one of the best ways to turn back the hands of time. This vitamin A derivative works by boosting skin cell turnover, which in decreases the breakdown of collagen and thickens the skin. Translation? Wrinkles are greatly reduced.

Look for a lip treatment that contains topical retinol as an active ingredient, like Dermelect Smooth Upper Lip & Perioral Anti-Aging Treatment. Keep in mind, retinol exfoliates the skin. Thus, you don’t need to use a lip scrub if you are using a retinol on your lips. In fact, doing so could irritate your lips.

Lip lines are a natural part of aging, but they are treatable. With a few lifestyle changes (and a few targeted treatments), you can smooth out existing lip lines and prevent new ones from forming. Dermelect’s Ultimate Smooth Lip Kit has everything for your lip-smoothing transformation!
