5 Chic Ways to Layer Fall Clothing for Changing Temps

By on September 30, 2019, in Fashion Trends

When it comes to putting together outfits, layering fall clothing for women seems to be almost instinctive. Temperatures can be unpredictable this time of year, even changing throughout the day. In addition, the temperatures inside homes and buildings can also vary, making layers a good option for anyone who wants to stay comfortable.

Here are some of our favorite fall layering ideas:

Double-Duty Layering with Long-Sleeved Shirts

Long-sleeved shirts for women are wardrobe workhorses. They make great outer layering pieces in early fall when warmer weather is the rule rather than the exception. We like to layer them over short or long-sleeved T-shirts, camisoles, and tanks. Add some sophistication and style by belting an oversized shirt over a tank top or cami and then adding a statement necklace.

Cardigans Over Tops

As the days get cooler, soft sweaters may be more comfortable and cozy. Cardigans are a good choice for this time of year and can be styled much the same as a long sleeve shirt over a lighter top. If you are dressing for a more formal occasion, a cardigan may be a better layering choice than a shirt.

Jackets Over Cardigans

If the weather near you is unpredictable, or you can expect a significant temperature shift during the day, layering three or more garments and accessories is often a good idea. This allows you the flexibility of removing and putting back on layers as needed to feel comfortable.

One way to do this is to wear two outer layers, such as a cardigan under a jacket or blazer. This also gives you an opportunity to play with color and texture: Try a thin wool cardigan under a tweed, linen-blend, or suede jacket for an eye-catching look.

Shawls and Scarves

Scarves, shawls, and wraps offer still more layering options. Pair a contrasting scarf with a jacket-cardigan combo, or on warmer days, drape a wrap over a blouse or sweater.

Layering a Dress

It’s easy to think of dresses as stand-alone garments: After all, most can be worn this way. But it is quite possible to incorporate a dress in a layered look. Here are some ideas:

– Wear a blouse under a sleeveless or short-sleeved dress.
– Button a jacket or cardigan over a dress, accessorizing with a statement necklace or scarf.
– Sweater tunics over dresses provide warmth and versatility: Your dress suddenly becomes a skirt!
